Mike Curtis - Bassoon

Mike Curtis serves as principal bassoonist for the Eugene Symphony; he has played for 45 years. He also plays clarinet, saxophone, and oboe. He grew up in San Diego, Calinfornia. A favorite piece of his is Libertango by Piazzolla. He currently plays with the Cascadia Clarinet Quartet and the Arrieu Wind Quartet. In the past, he has played in jazz, klezmer, Renaissance and rock bands. If he were to learn another instrument, it would be the double bass because of its deep resonance and versatility. Mike has a Bachelor of Music degree from Northern Arizona University, a Master of Music degree from the University of Southern California, and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in reed performance from University of Arizona. His father played clarinet and saxophone and taught his high-school band for three years. A memorable experience in the Symphony was playing a donor concert under Marin Alsop where he performed solos on six different instruments in the Rumanian Folk Dances of Bartok.
